Personal Care at Home Bill
posted on Wednesday 17th February 2010
The Personal Care at Home Bill will enable the Government to provide for those with the greatest care needs to be offered free personal care at home.
The Bill was announced in the Queen's Speech on 18 November, was introduced to Parliament on 25 November. It has now completed all stages in the House of Commons and is currently scheduled to receive its second reading in the House of Lords on Monday 1 February.
Existing powers allow the Government to require local authorities to provide certain community care services free of charge for up to six weeks.
The Bill would help around 400,000 people with care needs and guarantee free personal care for the 280,000 people with the greatest need. The legislation is intended to be the first step toward a new National Care Service.
